Hiring a Private Chauffeur in Paris — What Actually Matters
In Paris, the word chauffeur covers two entirely different professions. One is a licensed grande remise operator; the other is an app-dispatched VTC driver. They share a black car and little else. Understanding the distinction is the first step to hiring well.
Grande remise vs. VTC
Grande remise is a regulated category dating to 1955, requiring a prefecture licence, a professional aptitude certificate, and a vehicle held to defined standards. A VTC operates under the 2014 framework — lighter requirements, app-based dispatch, variable training. The grande remise driver is contracted to you for the day or the journey; the VTC is dispatched per ride. The practical gap shows in route knowledge, discretion, and the ability to wait, anticipate, and adapt without instruction.
What an exceptional chauffeur does
He arrives fifteen minutes early and parks where he will not block. He knows three routes to every destination and chooses by live traffic, not GPS default. He opens the door from the kerb side, never the traffic side. He carries water, an umbrella, a phone charger, and the day's itinerary memorised. He speaks when addressed and is silent otherwise. He tracks your flight and adjusts pickup without being asked.
What he does not do
He does not volunteer opinions on your schedule, your guests, or your destinations. He does not use his phone for anything but navigation and your coordination. He does not repeat what he hears in the car — confidentiality is the profession, not a courtesy. He does not pull up to a venue entrance when discretion calls for a side approach, and he does not park where he draws attention.
How to vet before you book
Ask for the grande remise licence number and the operator's carte professionnelle — both are verifiable. Confirm the vehicle is owned or long-leased by the operator, not sub-contracted per trip. Ask how they handle a delayed flight, a last-minute reroute, and a multi-stop evening — the answers reveal whether you are hiring a service or a single ride. Establish whether the same driver stays with you across the assignment; continuity is the point.
